Carrier maintenance

RCOH:

Mid-life Refueling and Complex Overhaul done at Norfolk, Virginia. Newport News Shipbuilding is the only facility conducting the midlife refueling. During RCOH the ship will be refuelled and receive modifications. The entire process takes over four years to complete. All aircraft Nimitz class carriers will undergo the RCOH halfway of their expected 50 year service life.

PIA:

Planned Incremental Maintenance.

Carrier news

Before a deployment - normally six months - takes place the carrier strike group (aircraft carrier and the accompanying ships) and its Carrier Air Wing will conduct Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX).

A home port swop (with planned dates not communicated) will take place for three carriers allowing them to undergo maintenance and keep the Pacific fleet at five aircraft carriers.

USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72): to San Diego, California after its RCOH has been completed in 2021. The Lincoln was assigned to the Pacific fleet after its commissioning in 1989 and served from 1990 until 2011 when it transferred to the Atlantic fleet and was inducted into the RCOH which was completed in May 2017.

USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74): to Newport News for RCOH. Home ported in Bremerton since 2005 when it relocated from San Diego.

USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70): to Naval base Kitsap-Bremerton for planned PIA at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard..
